Day 17

22nd September

Am I too critical of Truss?

Let’s face it, she has not actually done anything yet.

There’s a bit of a competition between the government and Putin for space in the papers and news bulletins today.

As ever, Putin is threatening to use nuclear weapons.

Should I be scared?

Not really. There’s nothing I can do about this.

There were announcements about improving the NHS. Laughter is supposed to be a good remedy for stress and ill health and I’m on the floor laughing now. We are promised a two week maximum waiting time to see a doctor and improvements in how surgeries answer calls. Is that it? An end to the 8am rush (Mission Impossible in some places)? How do you turn around years of decline (according to the medical association – and of course they are absolutely biased and spread nothing but fake news – things were okay up until about 2017 and then it all started going downhill. Now let me think who the governing party has been).

Thérèse Coffey does not stand a chance as Health Secretary. Cartoons already appearing of her smoking a cigar and looking anything but healthy (okay, I’ll eat my low calorie words in a few months’ time if she turns things around. She will be the one laughing if we are nuked; at least that will remove any pressure on NHS targets since we will all be a target by then).

The ban on fracking is lifted. Rees Mogg (an image of modern Britain if ever there was one – Word told me I was spelling the name incorrectly and suggested Mugg, Moggi or Moggs. Mugg – as in the rest of us – is too close to the mark) said that Putin was funding anti-fracking publicity. I’m sure that’s high on Putin’s wish list.

It’s interesting how names in the press become as familiar as those of your neighbours. William and Kate sound as though they live next door. Harry and Meghan, yes I bumped into them in the COOP. Truss, a medical support. Putin, that bottle of weedkiller in the greenhouse. Okay, I’ll stop now.

And interest rates are up, although I doubt if I will see any real benefits in terms of returns on any savings (Mugg, Moggi or Moggs might).

Meanwhile, where is Nicki? Trying hard to remember the names of anyone else in her cabinet. I think the health secretary (Scottish one) was on saying he realised how bad things were (that makes me feel better, words of sympathy have as much of an effect as laughter).

Autumn feels as though it has arrived. The Virginia creeper has almost totally turned a deep red; dahlias still flowering although I think the cold will stop that; no sign of the hedgehogs these days, I think the building work over the back garden fence has put an end to their visits; never see the sparrowhawk these days, that was a regular visitor; few butterflies in the garden this year.

Just heading out on the bike.
